Assessing the Weekly News
Week 07 [2026/01/10-2026/01/16]

Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 16. The talks focused on restoring Sino-Canadian relations after years of prolonged frictions. Specifically, the two sides agreed to reduce tariffs in their trade exchanges, with Beijing moving toward lowering duties on imports of oil, while Ottawa agreed to limit tariffs on electric vehicles. This meeting is considered crucial, as it marks a substantial recalibration of Canada’s foreign policy, one less closely aligned with the US, whose recent practices have increased uncertainty in international trade.
