Assessing the Weekly News
Week 17 [2026/03/21-2026/03/27]
_
Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the US’s ultimatum to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on 22 March. Initially, President Trump announced a 48‑hour deadline for Tehran, which was postponed the following day due to the absence of negotiations. On 24 March, it became known through the media that the US had sent, through intermediaries, a ceasefire proposal to Iran, which was publicly rejected. Therefore, the conflict continues to escalate without official talks between the two sides. The actions of the US reflect concerns about long‑term military involvement, despite initial planning, and they want to find a way to withdraw from the conflict in the Middle East.
