Assessing the Weekly News
Week 24 [2026/05/16-2026/05/22]
_
Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the visit of Vladimir Putin to Beijing on May 20. The meeting between the Russian President and his Chinese counterpart attracted significant attention from the international community, as it took place one week after the visit of Donald Trump to China. The two leaders reaffirmed the strong ties between their countries and agreed to deepen bilateral defense cooperation. This development is particularly important because it reflects the intention of both sides to maintain their close relations, despite the hopes of Western countries that a rift might emerge in the Russia-China axis.
