Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the tense diplomatic crisis between the United States and Venezuela, which occurred on 12 December 2025. The US authorities seized the oil tanker Skipper off the coast of Venezuela, an incident which the Venezuelan government described as an act of “international piracy”. This event has led to increased tensions in the Caribbean region, with threats of further diplomatic retaliation. This crisis is accompanied by new US economic measures and a military presence in the area, while Venezuela suspended migrant repatriation flights from the US, raising concerns about regional instability and the possible impacts on energy flows.
