Interpreting the US National Strategy

This article examines the U.S. national strategy for 2026 as outlined in the National Security Strategy released by the White House in December 2025. The main element of the American strategy is the implementation of a modernized version of the Monroe Doctrine, according to which the U.S. will aim to establish its control in the Western Hemisphere. These developments signify the return of the “spheres of influence” ideology that characterized the international system during the 19th century and the Cold War. The article refers to the cases of Venezuela, Greenland, and others as examples of the Trump administration applying the Monroe Doctrine. Moreover, different aspects of the National Security Strategy, such as U.S.-Europe relations and the role of energy in the strategic planning of the American administration, are also examined in the article.
