Assessing the Weekly News
Week 08 [2026/01/17-2026/01/23]
_
Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the launch of the Board of Peace, which is chaired indefinitely by the current President of the US. The UN Security Council had approved the Board of Peace to monitor the postwar situation in Gaza. Afterwards, Donald Trump aimed to transform it into an international organization with broader ambitions. The founding ceremony, which was held as part of the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, was attended by nineteen heads of state, while more than fifty countries have been invited to participate. This is a significant development, as the Board of Peace is a novel organization, raising concerns about undermining the role of the UN.
