The most important event of the week is the meeting of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on January 28. This is the second official visit of the Syrian President to Moscow since last October, indicating that Russia’s interest in Syria persists even after the fall of the Assad regime. During the talks, the emphasis was placed on the continuous Russian presence at the Tartus naval base and the Khmeimim air base near Latakia. These talks show that Russia wants to maintain a footprint in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean in the near future.
