Assessing the Weekly News
Week 10 [2026/01/31-2026/02/06]
_
Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the expiration of the New START nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia on February 6. The agreement was the last major framework that limited the number of strategic nuclear weapons held by the two countries and included mutual inspections. With its expiration, there is no longer an active mechanism that controls nuclear arsenals between the world’s two leading nuclear powers. This development increases the risk of a new arms race and adds to global uncertainty during a period already marked by high geopolitical tensions.
