Assessing the Weekly News
Week 23 [2026/05/09-2026/05/15]

Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the official visit of US President Donald Trump to Beijing from May 13-15. His meeting with Xi Jinping stands out as the premier geopolitical event, as the two superpowers attempted to establish a framework for “strategic stability” amid the escalating Iran crisis, which threatens the global economy with an energy crash. Ultimately, despite its considerable diplomatic weight and tech-focused discussions, the visit served as a fragile truce. It did not produce binding trade agreements and left the thorny Taiwan issue unresolved.
