Assessing the Weekly News
Week 25 [2026/05/23-2026/05/29]
_
Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the imposition of trade restrictions by Russia against Armenia on May 30. Moscow has banned the import of several agricultural products and has also warned that it could limit the supply of low-cost energy to Yerevan ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7. This move is linked to Russia’s dissatisfaction with the pro-Western orientation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government, as he seeks his third term in office. This development is particularly significant because it highlights the growing competition between Russia and the West for the South Caucasus, a region already characterized by fragile balances and competing interests.
