Assessing the Weekly News
Week 26 [2026/05/30-2026/06/05]
_
Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:
_
The most important event of the week is the publication of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s open letter to Vladimir Putin on June 4. The Ukrainian President proposed that his Russian counterpart end the war and agree to a direct meeting in a third country. The next day, Putin rejected the proposal, claiming that there was no point in holding such a meeting and emphasizing that the war would only end when the Russian objectives had been achieved. This development reinforces the belief that the war is not moving toward an end, instead heading toward a possible escalation of hostilities.
